There are a million reasons to have a parade. A holiday, a sports team win, a high school Homecoming court… all great reasons to clear the streets for some floats and let the cheering on the sidelines begin. There’s something so ancient about parades, and it’s kind of funny that we still do them. We love it when things go through the streets so we can look at them and applaud. It feels very primal on some level.
Many things can be a parade, though, with the right attitude. A walk down the pasta aisle at Ralph’s while listening to the new Lady Gaga, for instance. Or walking out of your house to go collect the newspaper in the morning while wearing your house robe. Walking from your desk to the bathroom, knowing you’re going to make a second coffee for yourself when you come back. These all can be little causes for celebration.
