It’s time for me to come out as a high school punk. My jeans were artfully ripped, my hair was dyed bright red, and my walkman plastered with band stickers, and I spent my nights listening to the same songs over and over while eating Cherry Garcia ice cream and contemplating sneaking out of my strict home. When I did, it was straight to «The Temple,» a synagogue that was converted into a Korean church, where they somehow allowed mohawked and studded kids throw crazy shows. This was around when Smirnoff Ice came out, and boy, was it flowing. At those times, you could get a 40oz of the sugary stuff, which undoubtedly spiced up the mosh pit and helped destroy the bathroom with teenage vomit. Then I’d sneak back home, listening to The Descendents or The Stooges, feeling riled up from the action. I still hit up a lot of shows, but they’re usually a bit more chill. And I’m definitely not chugging giant bottles of Smirnoff Ice. When a song from my past (Boredom by The Buzzcocks is a favorite), it does bring a nostalgic smile to my face. These memes inspire a similar feeling of nostalgia, and maybe even a little more pep in my Doc Marten-ed step. Here’s hoping they do the same for you.
