When is it in the interests of a social group to know how much money you make?

No doubt about it, people can get cagey when it comes to talking about personal finances. Some are living well beyond their means, others are obviously broke, and a lucky few are rolling in it, but don’t want to shout about it in case they attract a few hangers-on looking for an easy payday. There are many reasons why somebody may not like to have a conversation about their money, not least if they are around people whom they don’t know that well.

At the same time, our finances are one of the unavoidable facts of life. It is not totally reasonable to expect that they will never come up as a topic of discussion in a social setting. Of course, there are times when this will feel less comfortable than others, and it is not wrong to have certain boundaries. However, knowing how to communicate and enforce that is important if you don’t want to make an awkward conversation even more awkward. While some people may not be entitled to certain information, it is possible to deal with the situation in a way that is tactical.
