Boss threatens to fire employee over non-refundable family trip they were notified of 8 months prior, offers them $500 as compensation: ‘Why does my being away for 8 workdays cause a complete meltdown?’

8 months notice is plenty of notice. Unless you’re the boss in this story.

Scheduling a vacation can be a stressful thing. There are a lot of pieces of the puzzle to figure out, and it’s hard to get everything aligned at once. Once you do, you want to do your best to lock it in. Any changes in the itinerary would mean a lot of stress and lost money. So you do your best to avoid complications and let your boss know well in advance. You know that in order to maintain good standing as an employee, you need to keep your boss abreast of your plans at all times. And you need to give them enough notice to be able to find coverage for when you’re away. But it’s also your right to use your PTO when you want to use it. After all, that’s what it’s for. You would hate to end up in a situation where you’re canceling plans just because your boss couldn’t get it together. But that’s the situation that this worker found herself in, after letting her boss know well in advance of her vacation that she was going to be gone for eight working days. Any good company would be able to handle that.
