Breakup with your toxic bestie: Why ex-friendships deserve the same closure as a romantic breakup

Breaking up is hard to do. When we think of breakups, we imagine tearful movie climaxes, quirky romcom intros, and our first high school love. In the real world, though, relationships aren’t just about the romance; they’re about profound connections. Human relationships aren’t limited to romantic affiliations, but a whole myriad of interpersonal interactions ranging from family, friends, and coworkers, to the seemingly minute camaraderie with your local mailman.

Why then, are breakups reserved only for romance? Friendships arguably delve deeper into the depths of social vulnerability; thus any kind of intense kinship—romantic or otherwise—should be given thoughtful consideration when it ends.
