One of my favorite works of science fiction is Back to the Future, and its various sequels. It may not immediately spring to mind when you think of science fiction, but it certainly ticks all the boxes. There’s a kooky invention that defies the current laws of the universe, there is a mad scientist, and all sorts of …

I wish I had a little alien buddy like E.T. I would buy him cute outfits, take him to the park, and we’d become best friends. I’d protect him from the dangerous forces of scientists and government officials who want to send him back to his planet. I’d invite all my friends over and we’d play …

One of my favorite sci-fi conventions is the talking robot sidekick. I love when a little robot guy has funny quips and one-liners, and has a personality of its own. Like R2-D2 or Moby from Tim and Moby. They may not have emotions, but they do provide excellent comic relief. I wish the real robots in …

If a spaceship came down to my place of work and told me to hop aboard, I don’t know if I’d do it. Sure, space travel sounds fun, and it would be pretty existentially humbling to see the world spinning without me on it, but it’s also… scary. I went to Space Camp when I was a …

As the old saying goes, «Shoot for the moon, land among the stars.» I don’t know about you, but that phrase alone sparked my imagination so much as a child. I realize it’s a simple turn of phrase meant to illustrate that you can never dream too big, but the image of rocketing up to the …

You can’t have science fiction without science and fiction. This trips a lot of people up, surprisingly. Some folks forget the science part and think franchises like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter count, just because they’re made up. I hate to break it to you, but that’s fantasy. No, science fiction means that the world is extrapolated from …

It’s important to have friends to share your fandom with because it makes everything more fun. Sure, it’s a wonderful thing to cozy up with your trusty Dune DVD on a cozy Sunday night all by your lonesome, but it’s even more fun to make giant worm cupcakes with your gal pals. Or to attend …

Science fiction isn’t just for nerds anymore, it’s for everyone. And if you need proof of that, look no further than the absolute numbers the genre brings in at the box office. Good luck having a blockbuster hit if you’re just playing to the nerds. Unless the whole country has been overtaken by nerds and now normies …

Of all the sci-fi inventions that I wish could come to life, the time machine is probably the one I feel the strongest about. Yes, it would come with its moral quagmires and space-time-altering conundrums, but it sure would be fun. The first thing I would do with a time machine would be to go …

How come, in science fiction, aliens usually look like bipedal green or gray guys with big heads? Why has that become the accepted image of an alien in our culture? Is green the farthest thing we can think of from regular human skin color? Where did the huge black eyes come from? Why are their heads …
