You should never have to act as a friend’s personal piggybank. Even if they are guilting you into it.
Mixing friends and finances can lead to an uncomfortable situation pretty quickly. When things go south, and they usually do, it can jeopardize the friendship and your bank account. You don’t want to end up friendless and with no money. But that’s the track that this couple was clearly on, after they got entangled with another couple who were buying a house. It’s not easy to buy a house, no matter where you are. It’s a huge financial undertaking, and it shouldn’t be taken on lightly until you consider all the angles. The couple in this story did not do that. They had enough money for the deposit, but homeownership is so much more than that. What about the taxes, the fees, the moving costs, and the unexpected repairs, just to name a few? You have to be pretty financially secure in order to take that on without taking a loan. Speaking of loans, it should probably come from the bank rather than a friend. Your friends are not your financial resources. They’re people. And while they may want to help you out in a tight spot, they’re not responsible for your financial undertakings. You are. And you would hate to end up in a situation where you’re relying on them to the point where it jeopardizes their financial standing. It’s a whole big mess, and it’s difficult to untangle without losing everything.
