Should you have to give something up that you won in a raffle?
The person in this story, which was shared to the AITJ subreddit, was put in that position. He won something fair and square, and then was immediately asked to give it up. There was nothing fair about this. You know what they say, «ask, and ye shall receive.» But that doesn’t mean you should ask everything of everyone all of the time. That’s not being assertive; that’s being manipulative. But some people have a hard time learning that difference, and end up hurting people in the process. The woman in this story was one of those people who felt entitled to something for no good reason at all. Just because you want something doesn’t mean you are entitled to get it. This is a hard lesson to learn, though, for some folks.
It’s never a good look to ask things of other people that you don’t deserve. The thing about generosity is that it’s up to the giver to decide to give. You can’t ask someone to just spontaneously decide to be generous to you, no matter how much you might want them to. You have to just treat people the way you’d like to be treated and then expect that you’ll get the same treatment in kind. And if you’re not generous to them, then how can you expect them to be generous to you?
