My family will never stop telling the story of when I innocently ruined my mom’s surprise. I can’t remember if it was for Mother’s Day or her birthday, but my dad and I went to the store to get a wallet for her as a present from me. I couldn’t have been older than four at the time. The shopping went off without a hitch, but the second we got home from the store, I ran out of the car and screamed, «Mommy! Mommy! We got you a wallet!!!» In hindsight, the memory of this hilarious gift-giving faux-pas was much more meaningful and memorable than the wallet itself. Also, in retrospect, it was sweet that my dad and I went to get the wallet together so that I could feel like I was giving it to her instead of tacking my toddler name onto a gift that my dad bought on his own.
