Danny DeVito Tweets Support for Union Strikers, Twitter Temporarily Revokes Blue Checkmark

On Wednesday, beloved actor Danny DeVito tweeted in support of the Nabisco workers currently on strike in three states. The tweet read: ‘Support Nabisco workers striking for humane working hours, fair pay, outsourcing jobs. NO CONTRACTS NO SNACKS.’ Several hours later, Twitter revoked DeVito’s verification checkmark. It didn’t take long for the internet to notice, and boy did the tweets start blastin’.

Not to get too conspiratorial, but say Twitter did have some sort of vested interest in crushing the Nabisco workers strike—if they thought revoking DeVito’s identity verification would somehow help their agenda, the plan backfired big time. The mysterious temporary disappearance of DeVito’s checkmark drew even more attention to the tweet, and thus to the cause. On the other hand, maybe some rogue Twitter employee was secretly siding with the union and docked DeVito’s verification status in a convoluted effort to focus attention toward the strike. But according to Twitter, the timing was simply coincidental. Today, a Twitter spokesperson told IGN: ‘The account referenced was de-badged temporarily because the account’s information was incomplete. Our verification policy states that blue badges may be automatically removed from inactive and incomplete accounts, which require a confirmed email address or phone number. We have worked with the account holder to confirm the necessary information and the account’s verification has since been restored.’

We’ve collected some of the most amusing Twitter reactions to the mysterious case of Danny DeVito‘s disappearing (and reappearing) blue checkmark.
