A lot of employers will never give you the appreciation that you deserve unless you demand it of them. Even then, they are not necessarily going to be interested in giving it to you if they feel like they have other priorities.

If the anti-work people are anything to go by, it is rarely worth consistently going above and beyond for an employer. There is no guarantee that you will see any reward for it, and even if you do, there is a reasonable likelihood that the benefit will not be worth the amount of effort you put in. A lot of places like to keep hard workers in the same position, as replacing them will not give them the same results.
