Tethered to the turbulent carousel ride of the holiday season, many adults find themselves in the kitchen far more often than usual, and it’s making me sweat. Perhaps it’s chilly outside, but the heat of the oven makes my brows moist, my wallet ache, and my heart craves a simpler existence. Why does the Christmas roast always have to take four hours? Do we really have to bake 60 cookies this week? How many turkeys will we need for a 20-person dinner? There must be an easier way to consume a peaceful evening meal.
It’s these hot, glazed, and rosemary-garnished moments in the chef’s holiday kitchen that has everyone rethinking their culinary endeavors. «Girl dinner,» as it’s been called in recent years, is the heaven-sent feeding tactic that’s gotten adults, myself included, through some tough moments in life. Whether we’re busy after work, exhausted from running errands, or tired of wrapping Christmas presents for the extended family, girl dinner is the scavenger’s ideal meal: No prep, no cooking, and most importantly, no cleaning.
With girl dinner, hungry people can catch a break from the woes of adulting, taking kitchen duties off of their holiday to-do list as they munch on a plate of cheese, salami, pickles, and whatever crackers they have lying around in the cupboard. Bon appétit!
