Do you miss your partner and need to reach out to them now without sounding too clingy? Send them a cute meme!
My love language? Sending memes. You don’t need to constantly be over-explaining your feelings. Saying everything that goes through your mind just so someone can understand the deepest feelings you have inside may be a little much. Not saying that you have to be repressed. But as someone who has heard full-on declarations about how others feel about me and what crosses through their minds when they see me, it is a bit uncomfortable to know that much. You can just say that I’m important to you, and that would most likely be of better effect to me than the whole speech you prepared, but that doesn’t mean that is the same way for everyone. Maybe I’m a bit avoidant, and my experience doesn’t represent every couple; some people do love to hear everything that their loved ones feel for them, as that is the only way they can actually believe it. But some of us get uncomfortable and start feeling the need to run.
Love language is very different for each person. Some people love physical touch, being held, hugged, kissed, while others prefer to be told that they are loved. Words of reassurance are great for them. Some couples like to show their love with material things, gifts that were thought through and match the person they are given to, while others would just prefer to spend time together. Even if it’s in silence, the simple act of enjoying each other’s company is more than enough. This can vary, and sometimes in a couple, one may like one kind of love language that the other person despises. That’s why it’s important to make an effort to make the other feel loved the way they like while still keeping your own boundaries. For example, I’m not a fan of words of affirmation; they completely overwhelm me. Most times, a simple phrase like ‘I love you’ is fine, but a full-on confession is definitely too much, at least for me. I prefer spending time together, even if we are only watching TikToks each on our own phone. It makes me feel calm that I can share the space while we each do what we like.
These differences may be hard at first for a new relationship. It may seem like a rock on the road when you don’t agree on the love language you both prefer. But there is nothing wrong with that. You can like different things. As I said, I do not particularly like the whole words of affirmation thing, but when your partner does, you make an extra effort to make them know they are important to you. You start saying all the things that you would not like to hear, but they do. You love them in the language they want, so they can feel your love for them even more. The effort that you make is valuable, is a representation of love, and is another love language on its own.
