‘I won’t even be civil with him’: 16-year-old son refuses to acknowledge dad’s affair partner, tells him he doesn’t care about his new stepchildren

Kids should have more rights than we think they should. They get to have autonomy, especially when it comes to dealing with their parents. Sure, they have to abide by their parents’ rules while they live in their house and are provided for, but that doesn’t mean that they have no say in how their lives are run. This is even more true when it comes to divorce. It’s hard to be a child of divorce, and a few things make it harder. Parents having new spouses can sometimes make it harder. The addition of step-siblings can make it more difficult. And affairs and the aftermath of those affairs can certainly muck up the works.

What some parents fail to realize is that their kids can probably see through their wrongdoings. They might seem innocent and naive, but they’re better at absorbing the truth than most adults.
