Are we at a point where job seekers should be obligated to accept any role they can get?
It is no secret that the job market at the moment is even bleaker than in previous years. Genuine, decent roles are few and far between, with far more qualified candidates battling it out to get a single interview. The job hunt is something that most are obligated to do at some point, but it isn’t for the weak.
Not only can finding work be a struggle, there are also companies that have no problem with taking advantage of the fact that it is an employer’s market. They mess around with applicants, requiring elaborate multi-stage interviews and lowballing successful job seekers with impunity. The frustration doesn’t end with an applicant finding an employer that will take notice of them, but also navigating the ones who are serious and those who want to waste their time.
While it can be tempting for those who have had no luck with employment to take the first offer they can get, it isn’t always the most advisable choice. These working scenarios can turn into a real headache quicker than you can think. In fact, it often pays to have high standards and ask that companies try to reach them.
