Landlord sees tenant’s boyfriend visit 2-3 nights a week, demands he be added to the tenancy: ‘He literally has his own apartment’

How often is too often to have guests in a rented home?

The need to live by someone else’s rules is one of the most annoying things about having to rent. Just because you think it is right to be able to use your living space as you see fit doesn’t mean that the law agrees with you. Being a tenant who doesn’t face too many troubles with the landlord should not be too difficult a task, but some landlords do their best to increase the difficulty level at every turn.

One topic that can prove to be a sore spot between tenants and landlords is the policy surrounding guests. Most people would consider it pretty normal to have friends over every so often, or let their partner stay overnight. If the landlord finds out that this has been happening more often than they would like, though, there is every chance that the person paying the rent is going to be in hot water. A guest who spends too much time in their property is likely to be a potential tenant in their eyes. It is wise to keep it on the down low if you are letting people stay regularly.
