Manager excludes new hire from Friday pizza meeting until she has worked for 90 days, gets annoyed when she tells department head: ‘Now there’s no more pizza meetings’

It’s never easy being the new person in the office.

There are twice as many things to remember as when you are established in a role, or at least, that is what it feels like. Along with trying to remember the training and not make any mistakes, you have to remember names, not get lost in the building, and try to get acclimated to the company culture. It is a lot to take in all at once while attempting to adjust.

As a result, it is a vulnerable time in an individual’s career when they really need the support of their colleagues. They can’t become part of the team without the team making an effort with them. Too many newbies find that one of the most difficult parts of the job is dealing with their coworkers, simply because they do not like to deal with having somebody else at work.

Despite teamwork being a skill that most job descriptions insist on, it is not always something that is practiced in the workplace when it comes to welcoming new colleagues. Sometimes, the thing you figure out fastest when you start a job is who has issues and how they are going to relate to you.
