Manager hesitates to criticize high-performing employee who refuses to document work: ‘The rest of the team is stuck’

Should a manager make exceptions for an employee because they’re good at their job?

When a boss finds somebody who is in many ways the perfect fit, they are usually willing to be a little more flexible than with others over what they will allow. They seem to solve so many problems that, up to a point, they can turn a blind eye to the fact that they also cause some.

No matter how great a worker may be at certain tasks, if they are neglecting others that are a part of the role, it is going to start to affect the business. If they are seen to be getting special treatment, that will only cause resentment among coworkers, too. What once seemed manageable could spiral out of control faster than you might think.

It is one of those issues that it is not uncommon to face in a management role. Finding a balanced solution that makes everyone happy is sometimes impossible. Nonetheless, it is important to try, as it is not pleasant to be in a position where somebody has to leave their role. A little sensitivity and logical thinking may do a lot to minimize the damage.
