I just realized that kids today might never know the thrill of trying to locate your friends with absolutely no information. It’s a very specific, unimportant realization, but man, wasn’t that the best?
Now you open Snapchat, look at a tiny little map, and there they are. Your friend is at a coffee shop. Another friend is at home. Whatever. Boring.
When we were growing up, finding people was an expedition. You hopped on your bike and did the daily tour of six or seven usual suspect locations. The court. The playground. The store. That one person’s garage where nobody’s parents ever seemed to be home. You didn’t know where your friends were. You had a working theory and a bicycle.
