‘Morbius’ Has Become The Unstoppable Meme Train We Never Wanted, But Probably Deserve

Forget all the Oscar bait, or the latest discourse-starting, emotionally affecting A24 release. The movie that is shaping up to be the one that defines 2022 is critical and commercial Marvel flop Morbius. Jared Leto’s scientifically-gifted vampire may not be a hit with box office audiences, but when it comes to the memes? Oh boy, is the internet all over that fictional blood disease like a rash.

Like many questionable fads these days, everything began on Discord. A server created to drum up a fanbase for the film started to create its own language around it, designating its fans as «morbheads», the process of fandom as «morbing», and its essence simply defined as «morb».

From there, things started to get out of control. Suddenly, the hot new thing for every terminally online person to be doing was to start morbing, whether they had any idea what the phrase referred to or not. At its heart, you don’t have to be an MCU fan to morb. You do, however, need to be in the know about how this specific brand of memetic derangement works, as evidenced by the posts here. It might not be to everyone’s taste, but morb is the new sus — and there’s nothing that anyone can do about it.
