Since when has nostalgia triumphed over child safety?
It is not uncommon for families to be big on tradition, whether that comes in the form of a special holiday recipe or maybe a name or heirloom that gets passed down through the generations. In particular, some people get pretty sentimental about the idea of special hand-me-downs that they hope will be used by family members for generations. They see it as a way for relatives to feel closer to one another.
What those who are invested in these traditions often conveniently ignore is that not everybody is going to want to be a part of them. Maybe the heirloom in question isn’t their style, or it isn’t practical for it to be put to everyday use. Just because grandma lovingly stored away some old thing with the hopes that it would get a second life in the future doesn’t mean that this will necessarily become a reality. Being prepared for that disappointment is a part of doing something like this.
Of course, it is almost always important to be polite and show gratitude when a relative has gone to the effort of passing a keepsake down to you. It usually shows that they care; it’s just that this care can be misguided occasionally. Ultimately, times change, and what may have been seen as a great investment 50 years ago isn’t always going to hold up in the present day. There are more useful ways to provide a gesture of love and support.
