One makes a lot of poor choices when one tries to be a good person.
Not to say you shouldn’t try to be a good person, the world is definitely better when people do that, it’s just that you should at least expect people to take advantage of your kindness. If you’re too nice, it is only a matter of time before you come to regret it, and I’m quite sure it’s not just the cynic in me who thinks that.
Those of us who always put others’ needs first know what I’m talking about. Being a nice person, who goes out of their way to make people happy, always comes with a price. And that price is usually being collected by the same people you tried to make happy. The only way to avoid that, is by monitoring your kindness, as silly as it may sound. Don’t give away too much, and learn how to say no from time to time.
Which is exactly what the person who wrote the story below should have said to their Karen neighbor.
