What constitutes a reasonable demand for noise reduction when a neighbor is renovating?

There are no two ways about it; construction work makes a heck of a lot of noise. Nobody is happy to see a renovation crew pull up to a neighbor’s house, as it means that they are about to deal with a considerable amount of disruption for an indefinite period of time (these things never get finished by their initial completion date). The homeowner might get a nicer place to live at the end of it, but all their neighbors receive is some relief from the interminable racket of tools and machinery.

At the same time, getting this work done isn’t something that can be avoided when it comes to home improvement. Most people who own their property will go through it at some point or another, and the best they can do is try to make sure they are as considerate about it as they can possibly be. Ultimately, this annoyance is only a temporary one, and there comes a point when everybody just has to accept the extra decibels until it is finally over. They would want their neighbor to do the same for them.
