I remember the high school graduation field trip like it was yesterday. ‘Promiscuous’ by Nelly Furtado was blasting through a sparsely populated dance floor while I sat among a large group of students eagerly waiting for the hypnotist to introduce himself. Eventually he made his lackluster entrance and guided us through a series of simple tests. He had us pretend that our index fingers were magnets. ‘Did you feel resistance when you tried to pull them apart? Raise your hand.’ Those who raised their hands were presumably good candidates for hypnosis. To my disappointment, I was not one of them. The students who went up on stage displayed a wide range of performances, some more enthusiastic than others. Whether the particularly zealous students were faking the experience to get a laugh out of their classmates or whether they were truly powerless against the hypnotist’s suggestions has remained a mystery to me.
