Many types of entertainment go hand-in-hand with advertising. We have come to accept a word from the sponsors in the middle of YouTube videos, or the first 15 to 30 minutes of publicity when we pay to see a movie in the theater. Both TikTok and normal TV are pretty much unthinkable without the regular breaks, and heck, a massive percentage of media outlets on and offline rely on advertisers to make most of their money. Even with adblockers and ‘premium’ paid services that promise to eradicate those pesky ads from our viewing experience, they are rarely avoidable altogether. Until recently, one of the only forms of media we could trust to be relatively ad-free was books.
