Retail employee helps elderly couple find formal wear for 20 minutes, gets scolded by his boss for spending too much time with one customer: ‘I sold around $150 in 1 transaction.’

He gave that couple a good experience that will keep them coming back to the store! Why should he be punished for that?

Not everybody is a natural salesman. If you don’t have customer service skills, it can be hard to learn them, especially when customers aren’t particularly thrilled about the fact that you’re talking to them. A lot of customers want to do their shopping quietly, without anybody getting in their business about what they’re buying or whether they need any help. On the other hand, there are just as many customers who are just the opposite. They want an employee to help them the second they walk through the door, and feel offended when they’re not waited on hand and foot by a customer service representative who is making $7.25 an hour in the year 2026.

When a great salesperson and a customer who wants to be sold to meet, something beautiful can result. You know that’s true if you’ve watched Say Yes to the Dress on TLC. Randy and company want the brides to be happy, and they do whatever they can to accomplish that. They take as much time as they need with each bride, and don’t rush through appointments so they can quickly move on to other customers, who may or may not even buy a wedding dress. After all, a bird in hand is worth two in the bush, especially in sales, and you’ve got to make sure you close the deal before moving on to the next thing.

The salesman in this story is a real class act. Instead of rushing through an interaction with an elderly couple like his boss wanted him to, he gave them personalized attention, which netted a $150 sale in 20 minutes. He didn’t regret taking his time to help this awesome couple find clothes for their grandson’s wedding.
