Sisters Face Backlash After Doing ‘Rick and Morty’ TikTok Dance in Front of Mother’s Casket

If you’re old enough to remember Barenaked Ladies, you probably remember that line from ‘One Week’ where the singer says «I’m the kinda guy who laughs at a funeral.» The compulsion to laugh or smile at inappropriate times isn’t a rare one. Experts say that chuckling during somber events stems from anxiety, which is very common – and probably why people tend to say that everyone grieves differently. We don’t talk about these things often, but this past week, a pair of sisters sparked a debate on mourning etiquette after publishing a video where they do the Rick and Morty TikTok dance in front of their mother’s casket. The post, which is peppered with the girls’ laughter, received serious flack – and ultimately led to one of the sisters being fired.

Though most of the critical comments have been deleted – there’s plenty of evidence of disapproval in the @rickandmourning follow-up videos. Some critics even compared the girls to Logan Paul (remember that tasteless ‘Suicide Forest’ video?) while others. But for all the backlash, there are many, many people voicing their sympathy and understanding. Some of the supporters include mothers who would rather their children celebrate their memory than grieve somberly. Others just wanted everyone to suspend their judgement for people they don’t even know. While we do believe that TikTok is poisoning the world, we can’t blame the Wright sisters for partaking in the trends of the times. If you’re concerned about the daughters, Instead of criticizing their behavior, you can donate to this GoFundMe that is going to their mother’s funeral expenses.
