Why is your manager always looking when you’re doing something wrong? 

Is it that managers are always watching you? Or are you just a bumbling buffoon when you’re trying to cut corners in the workplace? Regardless of your workplace reality, managers can either be the bane of your existence on the job or your greatest advocate. Good managers are people whom you respect and can confide in, but bad managers are the micromanaging militant types who distrust their workforce and rule with an iron fist. Can’t we just all coexist on the job together? 

I once worked at a bakery where the owner was extremely… Err, how do I say it? «Hands on.» He was the type of employer who insisted on doing everything exactly his way without any wiggle room for errors, excuses, or surprise sneezes. If you even considered doing something slightly different from what he instructed while he was on the job (which was constantly), he would flip out. Retaliating with a rageful expression and unforgiving aura, this boss never made me feel like I was baking cookies; he made his employees feel like the biggest idiots on the planet. 

I quit that job, obviously, and have since had several other managers lording over my work. There are good ones and bad ones, but the underlying thread of a bad manager is someone who tries to take over every second of your task. Managers and bosses need to delegate, that’s the entire point of the leadership ladder, and it’s that mutual trust and understanding that forges a stronger workforce in the long term. 

Loyal, trustworthy employees are worth far more than their weight in gold.
