Stranger confronts hiking couple for talking on a quiet Yellowstone trail, claiming they’re disrespecting nature, but the wife shuts down the scolding, and the couple finish their hike normally: «The trail was hellroaring creek, It is in bear country»

People being too loud anywhere is extremely annoying, in the middle of a forest or on a city bus. That being said, as life taught us all, taking the other extreme is just as bad.

Life also taught us that there is always one person on every trail who treats nature like a library where talking is a federal offense. They don’t care how empty the path is, how quiet the conversation sounds, or whether anyone is actually bothered. The mere existence of other humans making normal human noises is enough to trigger a full-blown intervention.

This gives off the same energy as the person who shushes a coffee shop because someone laughed too loudly, or the neighbor who calls the city because food smelled like food instead of nothing. The offense is never actual harm. The offense is that somebody else is enjoying a public space without matching their personal definition of respect.
