Teen invited to dinner at friend’s house is asked to pay for her own meal without warning: ‘It made me feel embarrassed and unwelcome’

Is it still an invitation if you’re handed the bill on your way out?

A 15-year-old left a friend’s house feeling embarrassed after being asked to reimburse her friend’s mother for a meal she never knew she’d have to pay for. While the money wasn’t the issue, the lack of warning and the different treatment compared to other families left her questioning whether she was overreacting or simply expecting basic hospitality.

This is a good story because I’m sure that this is more common than some people would think. For instance, when it comes to someone inviting somebody else, sometimes it’s obvious that they are the ones handling the bill. However, since most people don’t discuss this before the meal (or whatever the invitation was about), they get surprised when they realize they are the ones who have to pay for their own food.

Now, everything changes when we are talking about teenagers. It never happened to me that a friend’s parents forced me to pay for food if I was the one who was invited. And my own parents never asked any of my friends to pay for their own food, even if we were out to eat. So, if I were the OP, I would be as surprised as she was when her friend demanded the money from her for the DoorDash the family decided to order.

Sometimes that is weird, though, is that the friend asks the OP for the money, not the parent. This made me think if this is a common practice in this family? Or maybe the girl wanted to keep the money for herself? Anyways, this is something that we will never know. At the end of the day, this is not a big deal, and if the girl has to pay for her own food, then next time she will skip dinner with them and head home.
