Gilmore Girls: the TV show that best evokes the feelings of the autumn season and has one of the best satirical line deliveries.
I love Gilmore Girls. It’s easily one of my favorite shows that was ever created. Every time I’m sad or gloomy because of seasonal melancholia, I always rewatch it to feel better. The whole idea of sitting on the couch to watch this series gives me an autumn vibe. I feel like I need to be eating a cinnamon roll with a pumpkin spice latte or a hot coffee. But this show is not only cozy and calm, but it’s also really funny. You may get into the series at first thinking it’s just another mother-daughter story in a small town with curious characters, but it’s much more than that. It’s witty, hilarious, intriguing, and very satirical. The line delivery is perfect, always talking at a fast pace with a lot of sarcasm and pop culture references that are great for someone with such a love for it like me.
Lorelai Gilmore is the mother of the show, a once teen mom who decided to care for her baby on her own even though she was just 16 years old. She was from an upper-class family with a lot of money, but she left everything and worked hard to get to be independant and the only provider for her child. Funny enough, this child’s name is also Lorelai, but everyone calls her Rory. She is a very clever girl with big plans for her future that include going to Hardavrd to be a journalist. She takes enormous pleasure in reading, especially classics, which is shown multiple times on the show and has even created lists online with all the books she reads through the whole series. The story starts when Rory gets accepted into Chilton, a private school that will help her get into Harvard, but it’s extremely expensive. To pay for it, Lorelai decides to ask her parents — with whom she doesn’t have a good relationship — for a loan. They accept, but they have to come every Friday for dinner with Rory. This is the beginning of all the craziness that is about to come in the show.
My favorite part of the show has always been the way the characters are portrayed, the journey they go through, which proves that none of them are perfect or the worst. They are human; they make mistakes, but they all have a kind heart and big dreams. The difference is who got to accomplish them, and whose life is very different from what they had planned for themselves. The way the show is articulated is also very interesting. The phrases are memorable to this day, and some references are still relevant even now. That’s why I made a compilation of my 20 favorite Lorelai phrases so we can all be the judge of how good they actually are. To set the mood, I will tell you that my all-time favorite was always «Oy with the poodles already».
