But first, let me tell you a little story about the time I was humiliated by a child in front of all my adult friends. A friend of mine recently bought a Nintendo Switch for his son (but let’s be real—it was also for him), and he invited me and some other thirty-somethings over to play Mario Kart. Back in my day, I was always the best at Mario Kart, and so naturally I made sure to tell everyone this fact several times. The thing is, I grew up with friends who had the SNES, and later, the Wii. I’d never played Mario Kart on Switch before. So when we all got to my pal’s house to play some Mario Kart, I came in hot with the boasting and bragging about my superior skills. But I didn’t realize that in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you have to manually disable ‘smart steering’ before playing, which I didn’t do. Well, in the middle of the game, my friend’s eight-year-old son noticed this and started laughing. ‘No wonder you think you’re so good at Mario Kart,’ he said, ‘you’ve got the baby controls turned on!’ Everyone burst into laughter and I vowed never to brag about gaming again.
