Sometimes I lie in bed at night and can’t stop thinking about how we’ll never know the true author of My Immortal. For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past 18 years or are older than 40, My Immortal is the most famous fanfiction of all time, and it just so happens to be Harry Potter fanfiction. Go figure! It’s no normal Harry Potter fanfic, though. All of the characters are depressed emos, with the main character being a self-insert named «Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way,» a 17-year-old vampire girl attending Hogwarts. My Immortal was written intentionally badly to be the worst fanfiction of all time, and it succeeded on every possible level. It employs all of the tropes of bad fanfiction of the 2000s, and it’s just as much part of the Harry Potter lore as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. If you’ve ever wanted to be an emo vampire in Slytherin, I hope these Harry Potter memes will be edgy enough for you.
