Last week, something incredibly harrowing happened at a screening of Captain America: Brave New World. The ceiling caved in at a historic theater in Washington state, which could’ve been devastating. Luckily, there were only two people in the audience at this screening, and although the debris made a colossal mess, nobody was injured.
Gimmicks like 4D and 3D used to be such big things, but obviously, you don’t want them in an unregulated manner. 4D is best when it entails your seats moving a bit, like in last summer’s Twisters, not when inhaling asbestos into your lungs.
It would be easy to look at this instance and laugh about the less-than-great box office of Captain America: Brave New World, but I look at it and rejoice. If that theater was packed to the brim, a lot of people could’ve gotten hurt, and that’s not what going to the movies is about.
