‘Just be yourself’ is often terrible advice when you have to work for a living. It is a sad fact that many companies do not appreciate it all that much when their employees dare to show too much of a personality aside from clocking in, keeping their head down, and hitting their targets. In addition, if many of us expressed ourselves fully in the workplace, it would involve a lot of three-hour-long lunches and an attitude towards people we shouldn’t be showing an attitude to.

In place of a free and easy attitude towards working life, we have internet humor to redirect our frustrations into. Work memes would not exist if not for the trials and tribulations that come with being employed, so in that sense, we (almost) have to be grateful for contemporary working culture. At least it gives us something mildly amusing to do when we have a break.
