I think it’s about time Disney started adapting fairy tales again. One of the best Disney movies of the 21st century is Frozen, and it went back to Disney’s fairy tale roots by adapting Hans Christian Andersen’s story of The Snow Queen. I find it kind of wild that they’ve never really touched the iconic stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and The Ugly Duckling. Those stories might feel a little milquetoast and boring by modern Disney standards, but I’m sure they could twist them to be 90 minutes, musical, and engaging. Think of Tangled: It took the story of Rapunzel, which was known and loved, and built so much more than the basic story provided. Formulas work for a reason, and if Disney goes back to their tried and true formula, it’ll make me as happy as a clam.
