Texting can be so much more stressful than having an actual conversation. Last night, I was waiting to hear back from two friends, one of whom had suggested that we hang out on Saturday afternoon and one who was presenting a concrete plan to hang out on Saturday afternoon. I wanted to double-check with the first friend before making plans with the second, but the former did not respond to my messages as quickly as the latter did. If I had been in the same room as these two lovely women and we had been talking face-to-face, we probably could’ve resolved this conversation in about 30 seconds, but because it was done over text, we still haven’t entirely resolved the conversation. I understand that many people see phone calls as more aggressive than text messages, and maybe they’re right! But the aggression of phone calls allows us to get to the point of the conversation aggressively.
