At some point in our teens, we all wanted to «be thirty, flirty, and thriving» like Jenna… And then we got to our 20s and decided 30 could wait.
If there’s something all twenty-year-olds fear, it’s the prospect of turning 30. It sounds like such a serious age… It was ingrained in our minds that by that time we should have a career, a house, a car, a family, a dog, financial stability, savings, a college fund for the kids, and own half of Antarctica. Well, maybe not so much, but you get the gist. We want to have it all by the time we’re 30.
Feeling we’re running out of time is way more common than people think, and it’s a relatable experience for all people in their 20s. Especially if you have a friend who seems to be reaching all those milestones and you seem to be staying behind. But do you want to know something? There’s not a single correct way to live your life.
Ages 20 to 30 are a mess, and many people experience that period differently. Some are in college; some others are having kids and buying a house; others travel around the world. Some go backpacking through Europe, and some are stuck working at their local supermarket. The point is, each person’s life unfolds in a singular way, and comparing ourselves to what other people achieved at our age is only going to make us feel bad.
When I was younger, I was desperate to grow up, just like Jenna in 13 Going on 30. But then I actually started growing up and realized not everything is as easy as it seems. Most adults have no idea what they’re doing, and 90 percent of the time they are just winging it. Besides, if we learned something from Jenna is that, we might get everything we wanted by thirty, but that doesn’t mean anything if we look at ourselves in the mirror and can’t recognize the person staring back at us. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather stay true to myself and reach my goals in due time than pull some weird stunt to get everything I want by a specific arbitrary date.
In the end, Jenna got to live her 20s peacefully and reach 30 better prepared. I intend to do the same and enjoy my life and all sources of happiness around, like movies and memes!
