Trucker gets fired for being obese and refusing to lose weight: ‘I told him until I was red in the face to exercise, diet, do ANYTHING to make an effort.’

His wife is angry at him, and she has a right to be.

It’s a sad reality that there are some things you can’t do if you’re obese. This ranges from fitting on a roller coaster to running a marathon. When you’re overweight, you can get shut out of a lot of things in society, which is part of the reason why there’s such a stigma against being fat.

Weight shouldn’t have anything to do with the hiring process. If you can do your job and do it well, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t get hired, especially for work that doesn’t require you to do anything physically. While it’s true that some discrimination in the hiring process is unfair, some jobs are best suited to someone who can stay on their feet for hours at a time. Weight is not a protected class on the federal level, so unless you live in Michigan, the only state where weight discrimination is prohibited statewide, you’re out of luck if you get fired for your weight.

The man in this story technically wasn’t fired just because he’s obese. He got fired because he refused to use a CPAP machine, despite his job’s insistence that he use one to stay healthy enough to drive a truck full-time. His wife is extremely frustrated that he hasn’t put any effort into either losing weight or the far easier option of sleeping with a CPAP machine every night. If my husband lost his job over something completely preventable like this, I would be livid.
