Have you seen anything good lately?
For all people who love film, it’s getting harder and harder to find movies that are interesting, well-written, properly directed, and skillfully acted. What we see mostly these days are sequel number 45, remakes, and live-action adaptations of animated movies. Hollywood seems to be running out of ideas.
It is inevitable to conclude that the downfall of cinema has a lot to do with the rise of all things social media. Content gets shorter, faster, easier to follow, and more immediate. There are so many new videos, creators, and streamers flooding the internet every second that it gets harder for anything to stay relevant for longer. Besides, people’s attention span also gets shorter, which is why movies need to be eye-catching and easy to follow to keep viewers engaged. Complicated plots, lots of twists and turns, come out as heavy and get difficult to follow.
Hence, the quality of the writing decreases, and it starts treating its viewers as dumb, explaining every single detail, or, contrarily, leaving huge plot holes. It’s sad for all film-lovers who still enjoy detangling all the knots a good plot gives.
It all, of course, it depends on the genre of the movie. We definitely want entangled concepts for thriller or mystery movies. But for a romantic drama or comedy, we expect emotional depth and a feeling of coziness. For adventure films, we want to feel the adrenaline going through our veins. For every genre, there are different specific expectations. All they need to be is cohesive and well thought out.
Even though everything seems to be getting worse, there are still plenty of excellent movies and wonderful filmmakers that put their hearts and souls into their art. We can make a list of those another time. For now, we can forget about our slightly pretentious angst and focus on the hilarious memes we get from our beloved hobby of film-watching! Because whether we want it or not, we look pretty funny when we sit in front of the TV and start an endless speech reviewing every piece of acting, directing, and cinematography.
