It takes abysmal working conditions to make a person walk out of a job in a matter of days.

The vast majority of employees do what they do because they need the money, so it is usually no small decision to give up on a professional role that fast. In this job market in particular, they likely have no idea where they are going next, or where the next pay packet is coming from. They know that it is in their best interests to stay employed, unless the employment in question is legitimately worse than the pain of unemployment.

For companies, the time and resources it takes to get new hires are also an expense that we might think is something that they would want to avoid. A high turnover can be costly. Despite this, there are a lot of employers who do not seem to care less about retaining their workers, and treat them accordingly. They are interested in the value for money that they get in the here and now, and the other consequences do not matter. In these kinds of places, a lot of people quit simply because they feel that they are given no other viable option.
