We need relatable memes to help heal our divided world, but niche algorithms won’t allow it

The internet is full of memes, but are any of them truly relatable anymore? We all consume within our own algorithms and feeds, which serve us hyper-specific content. There is a niche for everything, every subculture, every fandom, and every slice of social media. The internet values specificity. Once upon a time, though, memes were supposed to be universally relatable. Old formats like «Bad Luck Brian«and «Trollface» gave us a shared language and served as a common ground. Where has that energy gone? Can we get it back?
