Should you go above and beyond at your hourly job?

Everyone wants to feel like they’re doing a good job. Part of what makes us happy and fulfilled as people is feeling like we’re doing the right thing and that we’re good at it. But unfortunately, this is too often difficult to do in a workplace culture that doesn’t always value the right things. As much as we like to feel like we’re good at things, we need to feel like we’re being incentivized to do them. If our work goes entirely unnoticed, then we might feel a little less inspired to do it. We’re not children. We don’t need a cookie every time we do something, but we do need fair compensation and a way to take care of ourselves with time off. These things are not always guaranteed, though, in the workplace. At least they weren’t in this situation where bosses nonetheless expected the most of their employees. When you’re an hourly employee, you don’t get a lot of protection. You usually don’t get benefits or paid time off or any guarantee about your continued employment. The trade-off for this is that you are there to do a service and nothing more.
