Anime, TV shows, and movies make it very obvious who the main character is in their story. Without a clear narrative direction, stories are hard to follow or just downright confusing. For the sake of simplicity, main protagonists are often flashy, dominant personalities that have a bit of «star quality» to them.
Typically taking over the screen with their exaggerated aura, protagonists are a hyperbolic embodiment of reality, oversimplifying typical personality traits and disentangling the messiness of human existence from the narrative. James Bond oozes coolness, swagger, and danger, while his fellow scene partners cower in his demanding aura, exemplifying a classic trope of an underbaked, yet indescribably charming hero. While this may be entertaining on screen, it doesn’t translate to real life, yet modern influencers have decided to trendify their ascension as life’s «main character.» Purposefully outshining their «extras,» they vie for the spotlight. While they frame their perspective as self-empowerment, «main character syndrome» is just a thinly veiled act of narcissism.
