Workers Discuss The Dismal State of Paid Time Off in America

We spend the majority of our lives working and rarely get time off. Once the period of our life where we get summer vacation is over, the era of having long stretches of carefree time with little to no responsibilities rarely happens again. There’s something so valuable about having time to rest and relax without having the pressure to be «productive» constantly hanging over our heads. Everybody knows this. We are not machines that can be perfectly productive at all times without issue, so why do so many jobs treat us like we are?

Paid time off in America is particularly abysmal, with employees getting shamed and bullied by their bosses for taking the time off that they rightfully earned. There’s something about our culture that’s literally addicted to hard work at all costs, including the costs of your physical and mental health. The people of Reddit discussed their varied experiences with PTO on the subreddit r/antiwork, which raised some interesting points about the topic.
