Everyone is allowed to have the wedding they want to have, within reason. As long as you can afford it, or have help to afford it, what you say goes. You don’t have to bend to convention if you don’t want to. You don’t have to wear a big white dress and invite everyone you’ve ever met. You don’t have to hire a string quartet and walk down the aisle to Here Comes the Bride. Heck, you don’t even have to have a party if you don’t want to. All that matters is that you and your partner are happy and that you’re not making it too hard on any of your guests.
But some folks are hard to please, and will be hard to please no matter what. It’s best to try to ignore these people the best you can, lest they get in the way of your fun. But sometimes they’re in your family, and you can’t escape them.
