18-year-old offers to cover meal of friend who’s struggling, when the total comes to $80 she backs out: ‘She embarrassed me in front of everyone’

When you’re offering to cover someone’s meal, is that a blank check for them to order whatever they want?

Generosity is an important trait, especially when it comes to friendship. The best friendships are built on a sense of generosity and trust. You want friends around you who support you, and you want to support them when they need it. It’s part of how we relate to each other as people. And sometimes, that means money. This can be a tricky thing to mix, though, when you are relying on one another for financial support. This can easily get out of whack and leave everyone feeling strange. When money is owed, people start feeling like they’re being taken advantage of, and resentment can quickly simmer under even the most healthy relationships. But money is an inevitable part of friendship. When you’re going out and living life with other people, that tends to cost money. And you don’t want to be left out of plans just because of your financial situation. If all your friends are going out without you, you would probably hate to miss out on something just because you can’t afford it. Maybe your friends would take notice and try to intervene on your behalf. That’s what was going on here, but it backfired.
