Sometimes it feels good to put in effort. The more effort you put in, the more you care, and the more you’ll get out of it. Sometimes, though, it feels so good to put in as little effort as possible. Skating by on the bare minimum can make you feel like a superhero. But there’s a time and a place for low effort (aka bar trivia or your niece’s birthday game of pin the tail on the donkey). And there are more times and places for high effort (job interviews, CPR, etc.)
It can feel like we have a finite amount of energy throughout the day, so we have to be judicious about when and where we spend it. We don’t want to blow all of our sparkle on the first task of the day- what if something else comes along that needs our verve? We have to be smart about it.
