When parents adopt a child as a baby, they are presented with an extra dilemma on top of all the normal and numerous challenges of parenting. How do they let their kid know how they came to be a part of their family, and when is the best time to do it? Just like any parenting decision, many adoptive moms and dads have wildly differing opinions on the matter. It is a sensitive topic.
In many cases, it could be argued that the earlier the conversation is had, the better. No child wants to grow up feeling like secrets are being kept from them. However, there is a point to be made that it could be more appropriate to wait until they are old enough to have a mature conversation about it. They will inevitably have questions, and they are easier to answer when they can understand to the fullest extent.
