There is so much to Greek mythology; there is never a limit to how much you can learn about the history and the stories.
Like many of my age, my first introduction to Greek mythology was when I first read the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. Even though I saw Hercules many times as a kid, way before reading the first Percy Jackson book, any Greek mythology fan will agree that Hercules is not really the best representation of the myths. But Percy Jackson? That was quite the education…
After that initial introduction, I realized just how interesting these stories are, and how much more I want to learn about them. And it wasn’t hard to find all kinds of adaptations that took the mythology and created the most beautiful art around it.
There was no end to my exploration. I read books like The Song of Achilles and Circe by Madeline Miller, watched and listened to musicals like Hadestown and EPIC, and saw endless movies, each representing a different piece of Greek mythology that I loved and was fascinated by. Every adaptation had a way of telling the same story, focusing on different characters and building worlds I never wanted to leave. It’s the best, and it’s far from even being over.
The Odyssey has been released in movie theaters this week, and I just bought tickets to a cool VIP viewing experience that I cannot wait for. All week long, I have been listening to my favorite songs from Epic: the Musical and reading about moments from the original Homer books that I am excited to see on screen. But even if it doesn’t live up to the expectations, I know I have many other Greek mythology stories that I can come back to, and that just makes every new one so much more fun.
Another Greek mythology element that fans get to enjoy is all the memes. We know that the Greek gods had their quirks and funny moments, and memes like the ones below are the best way to capture them all.
